China’s recently released draft law on genetically modified (GM) foods bans the production, trade and sale of any GM foods that do not have correct authorisation.
“No institution or individual should apply genetic modification technology to main grain breeds without authorisation,” read the proposed draft.
Processing GM grain that has been exposed to pesticides or any other contaminants will also be forbidden as well as transporting them in contaminated vehicles or packaging materials.
Producers will have to invest in improving storage conditions.
The draft also made clear that provincial governments would be in charge of enforcing the laws across the entire chain of GM foods.
