East Kazakhstan: Grain harvest should be good, but worse than last year

Celestial bureaucracy as usual plays tricks with farmers of the EKR. In June and July dry weather prevailed in major grain-producing areas of the region, which impacted the full weight of ear.

During the period of grain filling the amount of rainfall was below normal. Due to the lack of moisture the grain turned out to be “feeble”. It is expected that yields will generally be in the range of 11 – 11.5 quintals per hectare, which is lower than last year – said the head of horticulture section of the regional department agriculture Tleuberdy Kalihin to the correspondent of the IA “Kazakh-Zerno”.

Situation with winter grains is a bit better in East Kazakhstan. Rainy spring provided enough moisture reserves for the crop. But here also, the average yield was only 21 q/ha against 27 quintals per hectare last year. Now harvesting of winter crop in the districts is nearing completion.

In most households of the region farmers started harvesting of barley and oats, and in Urjar district growers began to harvest spring wheat. And the weather is favorable for farmers yet.

We recall, this year grain acreage in the East Kazakhstan region was increased, amounting to 593.4 thousand ha against 581.2 thousand ha in 2014.
