Main reasons for decline of veterinary medicine in Kazakhstan

Veterinary science, as the main part of agriculture, largely determines its development and export potential.

Analysis of the epizootic situation, as well as the problems faced by veterinary medicine in Kazakhstan, showed that the projects of the state programs “Model Farms,” Sybaga, “Bastau,” Breed Education “can remain only projects, writes on his Facebook page Doctor of Veterinary Sciences, Professor Gaisa Absatirov.

It is worth admitting that in our country there is a dysfunctional epizootic situation. Kazakhstan detects at least 200 hotbeds of infection every year, including those dangerous to humans, such as anthrax. There is no need to talk about parasitic diseases at all – they are not reported in principle.

It is worth admitting that in our country there is a dysfunctional epizootic situation. Kazakhstan detects at least 200 hotbeds of infection every year, including those dangerous to humans, such as anthrax. There is no need to talk about parasitic diseases at all – they are not reported in principle.

The worst thing is that these diseases end up getting people sick. Kazakhstan is in the second place after Kyrgyzstan on the incidence of people brucellosis. Recently, the publication «KazakhZerno.kz» reported the destruction of 150 heads of livestock in Kyzylorda region. In addition, 3 years ago, 16 cases of anthrax were recorded in four regions of the country in people with deaths.

It is worth noting that the imported population also brings us many problems. Thus, diseases such as infectious rhinotracheitis, nodular dermatitis, Schmalenberg ‘s disease and viral diarrhoea have entered the country.

The main reason for all this is the unresolved still key problems of veterinary medicine, which are divided into systemic, personnel, man-made.

System problems

Inadequate legislative framework in the field of veterinary medicine, which is a cumbersome poorly coordinated system of organization and management. Various inconsistencies and delays make it impossible to take prompt and concrete decisions.

• Low-quality wind operations and deficiencies in animal identification procedures. At present, the country lacks a clear strategy for immunization by major nosological forms, as well as a system for detecting the source of infection during diagnostic studies.

HR problems

In the field of veterinary medicine, there has been a shortage of specialists for not the first year. To date, there are only 7,000 veterinary specialists in the country, with their average age over 50 years. The profession of veterinary physician is not considered attractive. The following reasons contribute to this:

• Low pay. According to the Ministry of National Economy, veterinary activities are among the 10 lowest paid professions in the country.

• Lack of necessary working conditions for veterinary specialists practicing in rural areas.

• Problems of organization and realization of specialized education. Endless changes in the process of veterinary training do not contribute to quality training. In addition, the low cost of a grant for veterinary specialties does not contribute to the influx of applicants and professional teachers.

Therefore, it is not surprising that large agricultural companies prefer to invite specialists from other countries to work.

Anthropogenic problems

Many problems of farm animals are to blame for their owners. Thanks to the availability of information on the Internet, many owners disregard the provisions of the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan “On Veterinary Medicine,” namely, measures to prevent animal diseases, including those common to humans and animals, and oppose themselves to employees of wind services.

Also, in Kazakhstan the costs of veterinary goods and services are extremely low. Taking into account how much on average the owner spends per animal, in our country this indicator will be at the level of 1% of the cost of the animal, when in the European Union this figure is 6-8%, and in Russia – 10%. Most owners today prefer not to spend unnecessary money to maintain the health of the animal, prevent it from diseases and pay for the services of a veterinary specialist. Although it would help improve the epizootic situation in our country.
