Philippines implements poultry and livestock ban

The Philippine Department of Agriculture has issued a temporary ban on imports of livestock from Paraguay and poultry from certain areas in Australia.

In two separate memorandum orders dated January 31, 2012 and released to media on Tuesday, Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala banned imports of livestock from Paraguay, where the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has reported an outbreak of FMD on a farm.

Certain areas in Australia are currently facing an outbreak of low pathogenic avian influenza. The Philippines, which last year earned its FMD-free accreditation from the OIE, remains the only major poultry producing Southeast Asian country.
