Philippines to turn to imports for fish needs

Новость на Казах-зерно:

The Philippines will need to import fish in the future because of the declining fish catch in the country, Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Proceso Alcala said.

He noted that in 2011, the country’s fisheries subsector, which accounts for 20.7% of total agricultural production, dropped by 4.1%.

For several years now, both the commercial and municipal fish catch have been on a downtrend due to overfishing and pollution, prompting the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) to ban fishing in 10 of the country’s 13 major fishing grounds.

However, many fishermen’s group are opposing the plan, saying imports will pose unfair competition to the local industry.
