US beef removed from Taiwanese shelves

Новость на Казах-зерно:

Taiwanese health officials pulled US beef off the market for the second time in two months after discovering traces of the drug ractopamine, which is banned in Taiwan, China, the European Union and more than 100 countries.

The US is among 26 nations that have declared the lean-meat enhancing drug safe for human consumption.

The contaminated beef was supplied by the same food importer, who may face a fine of more than USD 200,000 for violating Taiwan’s Act Governing Food Sanitation.

The US has been pressuring Taiwan to change its policy on the drug but Taiwan’s Department of Health said the ban will stay in place.
