USDA: Rains hamper Minn. small grains harvest

Minnesota’s small grains continue to ripen at an above-average pace, but recent heavy rains are slowing the harvest, reported “Kazakh-Zerno” IA with reference to the “Businessweek“.
In its weekly crop and weather report for Minnesota, the U.S. Department of Agriculture says rain kept fields wet and limited fieldwork in northern and central Minnesota. There are some reports of drowned-out corn and soybean fields.
Corn and soybean development continues at an average pace, with those crops rated mostly good or excellent.
Spring wheat is 92 percent ripening, compared with a five-year average of 74 percent. The spring wheat crop is 9 percent harvested, compared with an average of 10 percent. Oats are 34 percent harvested, 2 points behind average. Barley is 15 percent harvested compared with an average of 22 percent.
