Vietnam targets to increase output of its fisheries sector to 5.35 tonnes in 2012 by focusing on new species and sustainable farming models, according to Vu Van Tam, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The ministry will make use of Vietnam’s competitive advantage in its fisheries sector to attract foreign direct investment and to upgrade its fishing vessels.

In 2011, Vietnam’s fisheries output grew 4.4% to 5.3 million tonnes. The country earned USD 6 billion from fisheries exports or a 20% increase year-on-year.
