Will Kazakhstan be able to protect its population from GM foods?

Questions of GM products usage in the world are discussed very serious and are not perceived clearly the different layers of the population in different countries. As is known, Kazakhstan had ratified the Cartagena Protocol. It is an international agreement on the measures and procedures necessary for the safe movement across borders, processing and application of modern biotechnology products, reminiscent of the IA “Kazakh-Zerno”. But Kazakhstan simply unable to counter the pervasive GM products.

Although in Kazakhstan relate to products containing GMOs in general negative, they are free to penetrate the Kazakhstan market, despite the law requiring specified on the product packaging the presence of genetically modified components. This is due to the lack of special laboratories for the detection of transgenic organisms and the absence of clear rules on GM food consumption. Will the world and Kazakhstan to avoid the use of GM foods?

Recently, a conference was held in Astana with the participation of the founder of the anti-nuclear movement “Nevada-Semipalatinsk”, a poet, writer and prominent public figure Olzhas Suleimenov, which was raised this problem. Conference organized young organization, the Environmental Alliance “Baytak-Bolashak”, the honorary president is Suleimenov. Alliance promises to lift the pressing environmental problems. Its founders decided to start with the issues of GMO products. The benefits and dangers of GMO products reasoned employees of scientific institutions.

The conference featured informative report «Biosecurity» editor Yevgeny Klimov, presented an overview of the situation with the spread of GMO products in Kazakhstan and informed about the opinion of a group of several environmental NGOs. – In Kazakhstan there is no effective system of regulating the safety issues of genetic engineering activity. No national focal point for security in the field of GMO propagation, – he said.

According to Yevgeny Klimov, in our country about the toxicity of GMOs are judged on the basis of short-term studies. The law has no clear position on the spread of genetically modified products, therefore, proper control.

If we do not have scientific certainty that GM does not bear the damage, we need to take measures to prevent its spread. Eco-Forum proposes to ban at the legislative level, the release of genetically modified organisms into the environment, prohibit the import of agricultural products and products derived from GMOs, to tighten control, – said Klimov.

So whether Kazakhstan will be able to protect their populations from GM foods? The question remains open.
